Caledonia Calendar Overview

Enjoy some of Scotland's finest scenery, highlighted in the Caledonia calendar, in which contrasting landscape vistas of lochs, waterfalls, glens, rivers and historic castles are strikingly photographed. Fascinating background notes about each location are also provided.

One photo shows the City Chambers in Glasgow. Originally built as a grand residential square, laid out in 1781, George Square has developed into Glasgow's principal civic space. With its collection of monuments and statues of significant public figures, it is overlooked by the splendid City Chambers. Crowned by its towers and cupolas, it was built in 1888 on the wealth of colonial trade and industry to reflect commercial pride.

Another image is of Ben Nevis, reflected in Loch Eil, a sea loch opening into Loch Linnhe. Britain's highest mountain, 1345m in height, attracts around 100,000 walkers a year, ascending from Glen Nevis on the south side. On the North Face, the 600m-high cliffs are a magnet for experienced climbers and mountaineers. Frequently shrouded by mist, the summit is the collapsed dome of an ancient volcano, with the remains of an observatory, used from 1883-1904.
