Planet Nature Calendar Overview

Intriguing images of wildlife from all over the globe, some familiar to us, others less so, together with background notes, are here for everyone to enjoy in the Planet Nature calendar. Outstanding photography of the animals and birds which share our world gives an insight into their character.

One beautiful photo depicts a polar bear and her cubs, photographed at North Baffin Island, Canada. Generally solitary and superbly adapted to life on the Arctic ice floes, with large, furry, partially webbed paws to help them walk on the ice and swim, polar bears depend on sea ice to hunt seals, their staple diet. While they have no predators, they are classified as vulnerable because of global warming. As the Arctic ice cap melts, and the sea ice decreases, they must travel long distances to find food for themselves and their cubs to survive, so spend more time on land. They also face other hazards including chemical pollutants which get into their food chain.
