Native to Britain, it is rarely seen, apart from in a few UK regions in coniferous or mixed woodland. It is very elusive and lives mainly in the trees, hunting for nuts, seeds and acorns. This striking black and red butterfly is a frequent garden visitor, seen feeding on flowers on warm days. Most red admirals migrate to the UK from North Africa and Europe, arriving in spring and laying eggs that hatch from July onwards. But some adults manage to survive the winter by hibernating here.
