This peaceful valley lies near the far eastern shore of Ullswater. The tiny stone 16th century church of St Martin stands in an isolated setting in this remote valley. The fells at the head of Martindale, centred on The Nab, are home to England’s oldest herd of native red deer. The rich habitats provide food and cover for the weasel, Britain’s smallest carnivorous mammal. It moves rapidly in undulating bounds, its narrow body allowing it to search through tunnels and runways of mice and voles.
