January’s photo shows Ilfracombe Harbour, North Devon. Built around its harbour, with whitewashed houses and elegant villas, Ilfracombe developed rapidly during the Victorian era, when a pier was constructed for ferries from Bristol. In the tiny chapel of St Nicholas a light has guided sailors into the harbour since 1320. In February there’s a view from Wrynose Pass to Little Langdale Tarn, Cumbria. At the foot of Wrynose Pass, one of England’s steepest roads, a single track with 1 in 3 gradients leading to Eskdale, is the pretty, glacial Little Langdale Tarn.
