The colourful skyline of Porto’s old town across the Douro River is a wonderful sight, pictured in February’s image. Vibrant waterfront houses, red-tiled roofs and churches hug the steep riverbanks, with traditional barcos moored along the quays and many splendid bridges. Port wine has long been produced in the vineyards of the Douro valley, shipped downstream in oak barrels and stored in port lodges along the river. The photo for April shows Hirosaki Castle, Aomori in Japan, built in 1611 by the Tsugaru Clan. It consists of a three-storey castle tower built on top of a hill, fortified moats, gates and turrets. The castle stands in Hirosaki Park, a famous location for cherry blossom in spring, with over 2,500 trees, blossom tunnels, picnic areas, rowing boats and illuminations.
