March’s page has a superb image of the Simpson Desert, Australia. This vast expanse of rolling dunes and deep red sand extends across the corners of South Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory. It features a wide variety of desert wildlife, preserved in a landscape of varied dune systems, extensive playa lakes, spinifex grasslands and acacia woodlands. The photo for December shows the Aletsch Glacier, Switzerland. This huge river of ice extends over 20km from the Jungfrau region to the Massa Gorge below is the largest glacier in the Alps, composed of four smaller glaciers which converge. Due to climate change it is shrinking by up to 50 metres in length each year and retreating significantly at the edges.
