British Wildlife Calendar Overview

The British Wildlife calendar is sure to appeal, with outstanding wildlife photography to bring us closer to elusive animals and birds from all parts of the UK, together with useful background notes about the wild creatures featured.

One photo is of a red deer, Britain’s largest deer, which inhabits forests and moorland in Scotland and parts of England. Stags and hinds usually live in separate groups but come together during the rut or mating season in October. Stags bellow loudly to proclaim their territory and fight using their branching antlers made of dense bone, which are shed each spring. Another endearing image shows a mountain hare, native to Scotland and parts of northern England. This small hare has a pale grey coat which turns white in winter, although the ear tips remain black. It stays in its form - a shallow depression in the ground - during the day, emerging at dusk to graze for food, which is mostly a diet of heather, bark, bilberry shoots and rushes.
