Railway Art Calendar Overview

Feel the exhilaration and power of classic steam locomotives from the days when steam was the fastest means of transport in the Railway Art calendar. Artists Malcolm Root and Philip Hawkins’ nostalgic paintings bring to life these iconic steam trains and are sure to appeal to railway enthusiasts and art lovers alike.

One painting shows a Class A4 Mallard built in 1938 and holder of the world speed record for steam, bursting forth from Hadley Wood South Tunnel. The Pacific is heading north to Edinburgh,in charge of the Elizabethan, a non-stop express introduced in 1953 to celebrate the Coronation. In another picture a LNER class C1 Atlantic No.4444 roars along the East Coast main line approaching Retford station, Nottinghamshire with a Leeds to Kings Cross express during mid 1930s; one of 94 designed by H. A. Ivatt. The first engine was built at Doncaster in 1902 and withdrawn from service by the LNER in October 1945.
