British Birds Calendar Overview

The birdlife of Britain is brought to life by wildlife artist Jeremy Paul in the British Birds calendar. Birds are pictured throughout different seasons of the year in their native habitat and each painting is accompanied by useful background facts as well as the Latin name for each bird.

The Ringed Plover is the subject of one delightful painting. This small, dumpy wader with a distinctive black neck ring and a low trilling call is seen on sand banks, shingle beaches and coastal lagoons across the UK. It nests in a scrape, a small hollow in the shingle and runs rapidly about the beach, paddling the wet sand to drive insects to the surface. Another attractive painting shows a chaffinch on a branch of purple wisteria. The male chaffinch is known for its conspicuous, brick-red plumage and exuberant song. Chaffinches hop along the ground in woods and gardens with jerky head movements. In winter they feed on seed in fields in flocks consisting entirely of males or females.
