Rural Britain Wall Calendar Overview

The harmony between our British landscape and the wildlife which lives in it is the focus of the Rural Britain calendar. Superb landscape images on each page are linked to inset photos of a bird or animal - often rarely glimpsed - which lives in that habitat, accompanied by descriptive background notes about each location and the creatures that inhabit it.

January’s photo location is the Cheviot Hills, Northumberland. The Cheviot Hills form the western edge of the Northumberland National Park. The College Burn flows down a long valley over cascades and waterfalls. The secluded Three Sisters waterfall is depicted cascading down the Hen Hole, a deep chasm carved out on the northwest side of The Cheviot, the highest hill in the range at 815m. The rare pine marten, shown in the inset photo, is native to this area, preferring well-wooded habitats and rocky hillsides. It is an agile climber, leaping between branches and running swiftly up and down trees to catch small birds and rodents.
