The Roaches is a jagged gritstone escarpment in the western Peak District, Staffordshire, pictured lit up by the evening sun in January’s photo. From the crest of the ridge there are superb views of North Staffordshire, Derbyshire and the distant Cheshire plain. Here the gritstone rocks and crags have been eroded into fascinating shapes, and they are popular with rock climbers. The fox, intelligent and very resourceful, is at home in this rugged terrain. It is an opportunistic feeder with excellent hearing which allows it to detect small animals underground.
