June’s photo is of the idyllic River Wharfe in the Yorkshire Dales. The lovely village of Burnsall in Wharfedale lies on a bend in the River Wharfe, with stunning fells all around. It was once an Anglo-Viking settlement. The River Wharfe is popular for fly fishing and is a fine habitat for brown trout. This beautiful fish is shown in the opposing image. Widespread in freshwater rivers in the UK, it has a golden body, flanked with pale-ringed dark spots. It is a fierce predator of small fish and flying insects.
