How can 2020 have 53 weeks in the year?

We all know there are 12 months, 52 weeks and 365 days in a year. Or do we? Your 2020 promotional calendar is about to prove that we shouldn’t always believe what we learn in school or what we have come to expect as the norm.

The thing is, if you work it out, 52 x 7 (or 52 weeks times 7 days) does not actually come to a neat 365 days but with the answer of 364. That means a year is actually 52 weeks plus one day or, in a leap year it’s 52 weeks plus two days.

The leap cycle in the Gregorian calendar has 97 leap days spread across 400 years which is an exact number of 20,871 weeks. In every cycle there are 71 years with an additional 53rd week, sometimes described as a leap week. These leap weeks correspond to the Gregorian years containing 53 Thursdays.

How is it worked out?

How do we decide which years have 53 weeks? There are at least six different week numbering systems but the one most frequently used is set by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO 8601) and states that all weeks start with Monday and each week belongs in the year in which the Thursday falls. This means that if the year starts on a Thursday or is a leap year and starts on a Wednesday, that particular year will have 53 numbered weeks.
Of course next year is a leap year, and when you receive your 2020 calendars you’ll notice that 1st January falls on a Wednesday, meaning that the year will have 53 weeks. That’s a whole extra week to enjoy your award winning Rose calendar!
